Like Water Channels (Proverbs 21)

“The king’s heart is like channels of water in the hand of the LORD;
He turns it wherever He pleases.”
(Proverbs 21:1)
A king appears.
A king who moves the world.
Yet the text does not first draw our attention to the king’s power.
It draws our attention to the king’s heart.
Let’s take a look at the Hebrew.
A Closer Look at the First Half🔍
פַּלְגֵי־מַיִם לֶב־מֶלֶךְ בְּיַד־יְהוָה
(Palgē-Mayim Lev-Melekh BeYad Adonai)
“Like water channels, the king’s heart is in the hand of the LORD.”
פַּלְגֵי־מַיִם
(Palgē-Mayim)
Water channels.
Wait…
Isn’t this the same word used in Psalm 1:3?
“A tree planted by channels of water.”
The very same water channels.
In Psalm 1, they form the landscape of life.
Now, the same word is used to describe the king’s heart.
Why is the king’s heart compared to water channels?
Let’s look at the second half.
A Closer Look at the Second Half🔍
בְּיַד־יְהוָה
(BeYad Adonai)
In the hand of the LORD.
עַל־כָּל־אֲשֶׁר יַחְפֹּץ יַטֶּנּוּ
(Al-Kol Asher Yaḥpots Yaṭṭennū)
He turns it wherever He desires.
יַחְפֹּץ
(Yaḥpots)
To desire, to delight in.
יַטֶּנּוּ
(Yaṭṭennū)
To turn, incline, direct.
Root:נטה(Nāṭāh)
Meaning:to stretch out, incline, turn, direct.
The text does not say,
“It flows.”
It says,
“He turns it.”
The water channels introduced in the first half become channels whose direction is
determined in the second.
According to the LORD’s will,
the water channels are directed.
The opening image of Proverbs 21 is not the king.
It is the landscape of water channels.
The same water channels appear again in Psalm 1—
as the channels beside which a tree is planted.
In Proverbs 18, the landscape begins with one who separates himself.
In Proverbs 19, with integrity.
In Proverbs 20, with wine.
And in Proverbs 21,
with water channels.
A single word rises from the text
and becomes a rich landscape.
